Organs of a 68-year-old brain-dead woman were retrieved and taken to three hospitals in the city. According to hospital sources, Rajamani, a retired teacher, hailing from Sathyamangalam, in Erode, was suffering from diabetes, hypertension and coronary artery disease. She was admitted to GKNM hospital on Thursday after she developed headache and giddiness.
A press release from the hospital stated that she was under the support of a ventilator after she suffered from bleeding in the brain. Later she was declared brain dead. Her liver, kidneys and eyes were retrieved on Friday. The liver and a kidney were taken to Kovai Medical Centre Hospital and the eyes to Sankara Eye Hospital. The other kidney was rushed to Abirami hospital at Sundarapuram – covering 8.7 km in six-and-a-half minutes – through a green corridor arranged by the Traffic Police.
