Coimbatore traffic police had prepared a green corridor to facilitate traffic-free movement on roads.

Organs retrieved from a brain dead patient saved six lives in the city. The organs were transported to four hospitals with the help of the city police, who prepared a green corridor to transport organs.

The victim G.R. Vijayakumar (47), of Sirumugai near Mettupalayam, was a manager in a KG Group-owned textile mill. His wife is a private school teacher. The couple has a 15-year-old son studying in 9{+t}{+h}standard and a nine-year-old daughter, who is in 4{+t}{+h}standard.

Around 8.30 on Tuesday morning, Vijayakumar was riding a two-wheeler when it collided with another two-wheeler at Annur. The man, who suffered a head injury, was admitted in KG Hospital. The team of doctors on examining the vital parameters learnt that he was brain dead the same day.

Hospital Chairman G. Bakthavathsalam said that after the second confirmation test at 4.20 a.m. on Wednesday, the hospital authorities informed about his condition to the Tamil Nadu Cadaver Transplant Programme authorities. After a few rounds of counselling, Vijayakumar’s family agreed to donate the organs to give a new lease of life to six patients.

The cadaver transplant programme authorities gave the list of hospitals where organs from the victims have to be delivered.

A kidney was allotted to KG Hospital, another to PSG Hospital, liver to Kovai Medical Center and Hospital, skin to Ganga Hospital and both eyes to Sankara Eye Hospital.

The retrieved organs were safely packed in special containers and taken by road to the hospitals in ambulances along with specialists.

On receiving information about the organ transportation, the city traffic police had prepared a green corridor to facilitate traffic-free movement on the busy roads.
