Nurse held on charges of stealing cash, jewellery

The police on Saturday arrested M. Shanthi, a native of Thanjavur, on charges of stealing cash and jewellery worth more than Rs. 7 lakh from a doctor’s house at Kuniamuthur on Monday.

According to the police, M. Shanthiwas working as a nurse and also as a domestic help to Dr. Kalpana.

On Monday, around 1 p.m., she claimed that she was assaulted by two persons.

She also said that they decamped with the cash and jewellery.

The Kuniamuthur police registered a case and conducted investigations.

However, during the course of police investigation, several inconsistencies came to light in Shanthi’s statements.

This caused the police to shift their angle of investigation.

She confessed that she had stolen the cash and jewellery and had faked the entire incident.

She said that she had drawn her blood through syringes and sprayed them around the house to portray as if she had been assaulted. She had also tutored the three-year-old son of the doctor to say that two unknown persons had entered the house.

Recovered

The police recovered Rs. 3.5 lakh in cash and 7 sovereigns of gold jewellery, which Shanthi had buried in a garden near the doctor’s house.
