Normalcy in Coimbatore, Tiruppur post Ayodhya verdict

Communally-sensitive Coimbatore city came under a security blanket on Saturday morning in view of the Supreme Court verdict on the Ayodhya land dispute. The law and order situation was normal in the district post the verdict.

In the city, a total of 1,800 police personnel were deployed in sensitive areas, public places and places of religious importance. The police arranged for security at temples and mosques in the city from the early hours of Saturday. Armed personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) were also part of the security cover in the city.

Security was also stepped up in communally sensitive Mettupalayam. A senior police officer said that Additional Director General of Police Shankar Jiwal was overseeing the security apparatus in Coimbatore district.

According to K. Periaiah, Inspector General of Police (West Zone), around 11,000 police personnel were deployed in the eight districts of the West Zone.

Tight security in Tiruppur

Nearly 1,200 police personnel were deployed in Tiruppur city on Saturday as part of the security measures.

Police said that the personnel were deployed equally in north and south zones of the city.

Sensitive areas such as temples in Varanasipalayam, Sri Nagar, Mahalakshmi Nagar and the mosques in Bavani Nagar were monitored closely.

Apart from the city, 1,500 police and Home Guard personnel were deployed across Tiruppur district.

Police said that they had classified parts of the district into hypersensitive, sensitive and normal for monitoring. Some closely monitored areas were Guruvayurappan Nagar in Perumanallur Block, Arivoli Nagar and Arulpuram in Palladam Block, M.P. Nagar in Udumalpet Block and Sultania Mosque in Dharapuram Block.
