Twelve inmates of the Corporation night shelter at R.S. Puram, who underwent rehabilitation and training on cleanliness and housekeeping, were given job orders by Sri Krishna Institutions in the presence of District Collector Archana Patnaik at the Collectorate here on Monday.
S. Gokul Raj, Founder of Reformers to Save India Trust, told The Hindu that the orders were given following a meeting with the representatives of hotels, industrial associations and education institutions a few months ago on rehabilitating destitute men and women abandoned by their children. He said that in the last week of November they visited the night shelter at R.S. Puram and asked if the inmates wanted to earn for a living. “Fifteen of them volunteered. We conducted games to check their hand and leg coordination, eye sight and if they were capable of working,” he said and added that 12 of them were short listed to undergo training.
The rehabilitation and training for the four men and eight women – aged between 27 and 70 years – began with collecting basic details, knowing about their families, why they were deserted and how they were taken to the night shelter.

After hair cut, they underwent health check up, given three sets of dress and slippers.
They were then trained on how to conduct themselves civilised, obey directions, motivated to come out of depression, face challenges at work and save money. They were trained on cleaning and housekeeping.
He said that the rehabilitated employees would be given monthly salaries in addition to free food and accommodation. The organisation would conduct weekly visits to the institution to build better communication.Mr. Gokul Raj said that with the help of the District Administration and Corporation the organisation has planned to identify 25 to 50 destitute living alongside the roads in the city and groom them as housekeepers. It is part of their initiative for a ‘Beggar Free Coimbatore’.
