Namakkal police conduct massive sapling plantation drive

As part of their efforts to improve green cover, the Namakkal police on Saturday began a sapling plantation drive at its buildings and premises here.

As many as 400 saplings were planted on the premises of the ground and police quarters with the support of Agricultural Department, Forest Department, Green Namakkal and many other non-government organisation.

Police officials said that as many as 1,000 native saplings like guava, coconut, portia, mango, sapota, beech, tamarind, amla, and a few other native fruit bearing varieties were planted on the premises of police stations and police quarters. Deputy Superintendents of Police headed the event held at the sub-divisions.

Mr. Arularasu said, “we have planted nearly 12 varieties of saplings at present and more places are being identified for this purpose. We are also planning to set up drip irrigation for about 300 fruit bearing saplings.” He added that as part of their rainwater harvesting efforts, they had set up a percolation pond in the Armed Reserve police grounds and the water level improved at the pond in the recent rain.

He added that rainwater harvesting structures had been set up in all police buildings here and those that needed repairs were attended to.
