Registration of more documents has been made mandatory from December 1 and this is expected to increase the revenue of the department this year.

According to an official here, some of the procedures that were optional so far have been made mandatory from the beginning of this month. This includes registration of construction agreement, power of attorney document, deposit of title deed, and sale agreement for immovable property. If the property detail is specified in the power of attorney then it will reflect in the encumbrance certificate now.

The official said the details of the new procedures have been displayed at the registration department office here.

Though registrations (of all documents) were slow now, it was expected to increase after Pongal.

K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, said mandatory registration of the documents would give validity to the agreements and the documents could be enforced now only if they were registered. The public should understand the importance of this move and register all documents.

Registration of these documents would increase when the related agencies start insisting on it. For instance, some banks already insist on registration of the title deed, he said.
