Modern allopathy pharmacy at Pollachi lies in disuse

‘It has turned into a place for criminal activities’

A modern allopathy pharmacy at Reddiayarur Panchayat in Pollachi South Union of the district, one of 12 set up by the State Government across Tamil Nadu nearly three decades ago, has been lying in disuse for several years now.

Residents of the area complained that lack of compound wall and security personnel for the defunct building prompted people to indulge in anti-social activities. Perumalsamy, a resident of Reddiayarur, said that the building threatened the security and safety of residents of the locality as it was a place for criminal activities.

Elders in the locality recalled that Thirumalsamy Reddiar, one of the prominent persons in the village, had donated the land free of cost to the State Government for setting up the pharmacy at the village panchayat, which has a population of 2,588 residents and lacked a primary health centre till date.

Apart from the pharmacy, another building on the premises used to accommodate a panchayat office. However, that building had also fallen into disuse after the office was shifted some months ago.

When contacted, S. Nallur Panchayat president T. Yuvaraj told The Hindu that a petition highlighting the state of this building was submitted during a public grievances redress meeting conducted at Pollachi by the District Administration.

Following this, it had been decided to convert the building into a primary health centre. A subsequent proposal to this effect has been approved, he claimed, adding that works will begin soon.
