Long-pending demands for better rail connectivity to Coimbatore not met

Industries here have welcomed some of the measures announced in the railway budget though they are disappointed that the long-pending demands for better rail connectivity to Coimbatore have not been met.

Welcome measures

Chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry, Tamil Nadu chapter, Ravi Sam, said that proposals such as foreign direct investment in rail infrastructure and better security in trains are welcome measures and need to be implemented properly. The CII will continue to represent to the Government the needs of the city.

According to R. R. Balasundharam, president of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, the chamber is disappointed that a night train between Coimbatore and Bangalore has not been added in the budget.

However, the budget proposes multiple efforts to make train journey safer and comfortable for passengers. This is a welcome measure.

Gauge conversion

The Railway Minister should ensure early completion of gauge conversion between Coimbatore and Pollachi as it will help the exporters in the region.

Bullet train service

Southern India Engineering Manufacturers’ Association president V. Lakshminarayanasamy has sought a bullet train service between Coimbatore and Bangalore.

More locations in the country should be connected by bullet train.

The association is disappointed over the proposal for FDI in railway infrastructure as Indian companies are ready to undertake these works.

It has welcomed the announcement of improving railway stations to international standards through public private partnerships.

Though there is higher allocation for railway infrastructure, the budget has not met the expectations of the public, especially in the region, says S. Ravikumar, president of Coimbatore Tirupur District Micro and Cottage Entrepreneurs Association.

Focus on northern states

J. James, president of Tamil Nadu Association of Cottage and Tiny Enterprises, says the budget proposals are disappointing as most of the new projects were focused on the northern States.

Committee

Kovai Power Driven Pumps and Spares Manufacturers’ Association has said in a press release that the railways should study and take measures for improvement of wail infrastructure in smaller towns.

It should also form a committee with representation for all stakeholders.

According to the Texpreneurs Forum, the railway budget is growth-oriented with focus on expediting execution of pending projects.
