Members of trade unions stage agitation in Tirupur

Members of six prominent trade unions jointly resorted to an agitation here on Thursday to press their charter of demands pertaining to the welfare of industrial workers, inflation faced by the society and stricter implementation of labour laws, among others.

M. Chandran, state secretary of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), said that minimum monthly wages for workers in any segment of the industry should be fixed at Rs. 10,000.

“This apart, the authorities have to take steps to contain inflation, otherwise which, any increase in salary will become insufficient to make a comfortable living,” he said.

The trade unionists wanted the formation of a corpus to the tune of Rs. 1 lakh crore at the national level to roll out social security assistances for unorganised sector workers.

Uninterrupted power For the smooth functioning of the apparel industry in Tirupur cluster, Mr. Chandran said that the Government machinery should provide uninterrupted power and control the yarn prices through market driven measures.

“Any collapse in the business will affect the livelihood of lakhs of workers dependent on the textile industry,” he said.

Members of CITU, AITUC, INTUC, LPF, HMS and BMS too k part in the agitation.
