Mega rangoli creates awareness on autism

World Autism Awareness Day observed in the city

Volunteers from the Third Eye Centre for Autism drawing a rangoli pattern at VOC Park Grounds in the city on Sunday to create awareness on autism.

The city-based NGOs Sharanalayam and Third Eye - Centre for Autism created a mega rangoli pattern at VOC Grounds in the city on Sunday as part of World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) observance.

As many 150 volunteers from Third Eye took nearly six hours to finish the blue and white rangoli pattern covering 15,000 sq.ft, said Saranya Babu Prasath, correspondent of Third Eye.

She said that the programme was organised in the city for the third year in a row. During the previous two years, events held included decorating the clock tower in Big Bazaar Street and the Coimbatore Railway Junction with blue lights.

World Autism Awareness Day aims to put spotlight on the hurdles that people with autism, and those taking care of autism affected people face every day.

Commissioner of Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation K. Vijayakarthikeyan lauded the efforts taken by the centre in creating the rangoli.

He urged the people to take the message to the masses that early intervention, before age four, can help children with autism integrate into school and society.

The event was supported by the KSG College of Arts and Science and the Coimbatore Chapter of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics.

Pollachi Sub-Collector Gayathri Krishnan also spoke.
