A solemn memorial service at the 129-year-old Saint George Church of the Wellington Garrison near here marked the observance of Martyrs Day on Sunday.

It was to remember all the known and unknown Indian soldiers who had laid down their lives for the cause of the nation. Brigadier S. Suresh Kumar, Station Commander, Wellington, laid a wreath on the plaque inside the church, which bears the words “When you go home, tell them of us and say, for their tomorrow, we gave our today”.

Among those who participated with their families were Lt. General S.K. Gadeock, Commandant, Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, senior officers, Junior Commissioned Officers and soldiers. Brigadier Kumar said that the Martyrs Day memorial service was being organised by the Madras Regimental Centre every year to pay homage to the brave and dauntless ‘Thambis’ of the Madras Regiment, who had died for the nation and assure them that their lives were not lost in vain and what they held aloft - the regimental pride - would inspire the present generation of the Madras Regiment in particular and the Indian Army in general to give their best for the nation.
