Rathinapuri police have arrested Ravi, 25, of MGR Nagar on charges of sexually assaulting and murdering his 20-year-old sister.

According to the Police Inspector V. Rajavelu, the incident took place on Friday evening, when Ravi’s parents were not at home.

The woman resisted his attempts, retaliated and pushed away Ravi. Angered by her behaviour, Ravi assaulted her in such a fashion that she lost consciousness. He then sexually assaulted her. Later when she regained consciousness, he had strangulated her with his hands, the Inspector said.

The incident took place between 5.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. when Ravi’s mother Chitra was away at her employer’s house in Vadavalli. She worked as a maid.

His father Viswanathan, after an injury sustained at the work spot, resided at his paternal grandmother’s house in Kavundampalayam.

The police said that to cover up the incident, Ravi had called his mother and relatives saying that his sister was lying unconscious.

Chitra rushed to her house thinking that the girl could have been under epileptic seizure. She then called an emergency ambulance service.

The medical personnel at the ambulance said that the woman was dead.

Doctor

Ravi’s family then called up a neighbourhood doctor, who only confirmed the same. Based on the doctor’s declaration, Chitra lodged a complaint with the police.

When the investigations began, the police questioned Ravi, who said that he had slapped her after he found her talking over mobile phone for hours together to her boyfriend.

Later the post-mortem report arrived saying that the woman had been raped, and the police again confronted Ravi.

This time, he confessed to the crime, said Mr. Rajavelu.

Based on the statement of the accused, the police slapped Sections 302 and 376 of the Indian Penal Code and sent him for remand.
