Special teams of the Coimbatore City Police recently arrested Jayaprakash Narayanan @ Baijur Rahuman on charges of cheating merchants by releasing advertisements, procuring materials and giving cheques from bank accounts that had no funds.
On October 24, K. Muthiah of Koyambedu in Chennai gave a complaint to Podanur Police stating that Jayaprakash Narayanan @ Baijur Rahuman and four other persons had cheated him to the tune of Rs. 4 lakh.
It is learnt that the accused using the firm names such as NTS Traders / Narayana Traders / Krishna Traders, Sundarapuram (all having live Tax Identification Numbers) purchased garlic. But, the cheque given by the buyer bounced with the reason “insufficient funds”. Hence, based on the complaint, a case of cheating was registered under Sec. 420 of IPC on December 6 against Jayaprakash Narayanan @ Baijur Rehman and four others.

On instructions from Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Amaresh Pujari and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic), T. Senthilkumar, a special team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime – South) H.M. Shakul Hameed arrested the accused, who was trading in condiments such as garlic, elachi, rice, dry fish, etc.
Investigation further revealed that the accused was into online trading business with merchants from Madurai, Myiladudurai, Huzur, Theni, Erode, Chennai and Tirupur and used to issue post-dated cheques, which used to bounce for want of funds. The accused was arrested from a bus stop in Kovipuduar and properties worth Rs. 2 lakh were recovered from him.
Mr. Pujari warned that those involved in online cheating / fraudulent trading through newspapers will be booked under cheating case and stringent action would be initiated against them.
