P. Arumugam alias Gym Arumugam (51) of Sengadu near Avinashi in Tirupur was beaten to death at the house of the councillor of Ward No. 1 in the Coimbatore Corporation, V. Vathsala, of Bharatiya Janata Party, at Manis Nagar near Thudiyalur on Thursday.
Police inquiries revealed that the victim was a real estate broker.
It is learnt that an argument broke between the councillor and the victim. On hearing the councillor raising an alarm, people from the neighbourhood rushed to her house and assaulted him. He was taken to a private hospital where he was declared brought dead. The police suspect that since the councillor’s husband, Varadharaj, is doing real estate business, the victim could have come there over a business deal.

The police are inquiring into the incident to identify those involved in the assault. A case of murder has been registered by the Thudiyalur police against five identified accused. A search is on for them.
