Stepping up action against unauthorised structures in the city, officials of the Local Planning Authority (LPA) and Coimbatore Corporation demolished structures that had come up without permission at Vadavalli and sealed a couple of buildings at Saibaba Colony on Saturday.
An official of the LPA told The Hindu that Shri Kannan Departmental Store at Vadavalli was housed in a building that was earlier a theatre. However, there was 11,500 sq.ft. of construction around the old building and used by the store. This was constructed without permission and included structures with hollow blocks or concrete walls with sheet roofing. The structures without permission were demolished during the drive on Saturday.
The LPA issued a notice to the departmental store on October 3. It was decided to take action since they had not applied for approval even after that, the official said.

In the other two cases, a structure that had permission for six residential units in ground plus three floors was constructed as a fully commercial structure.
A textile showroom in Saibaba Colony had also violated the plan that it had approval for. The LPA and the Corporation officials sealed the two buildings. The LPA would continue action against unauthorised structures next week too. The LPA had a list of 300 structures in the city and the LPA area. Commercial establishments without parking facilities, buildings that had come up or were coming up without permission or had deviated or violated the plan were identified for action.
Action would be taken on 99 of these at the earliest. This included 44 structures identified by the LPA and another 55 by the Corporation. Notices had been issued to many of these and if the building owners came forward to apply for approval or appeal, it would be considered. The LPA proposed to take up three or four buildings every week for action, the official said.
