LED lights helped civic body save ₹3.69 crore

The Corporation has installed 29,839 LED lights across its limits

Utilising funds under various schemes, the timely shift made by Salem Corporation from non-energy efficient lighting materials to LED lights is now helping the civic body save up to ₹3.69 crore in annual electricity bills.

The Salem Corporation, utilising funds under the ESCO and Smart Cities Mission has replaced 27,632 tube lights and 8, 462 sodium vapour lamps with LED lights for street lighting purposes and it has almost halved the power consumption of the civic body for the purpose. A release from the Corporation said that under the ESCO and Smart City scheme, Corporation has installed 29,839 LED street lights across its limits replacing tube lights and 8462 sodium vapour lights were replaced using LED lights.

Earlier, the civic body’s energy consumption was 1,18,72,806 units, 2710 kW and after the replacement with LED lights, the energy consumption has reduced to 60,55,131 units, 1382 kW a release from the Corporation said.

After the replacement of LED lights, the Corporation has reduced its energy consumption for this purpose by 49%, 1,328 kW of power is being saved. The electricity bills of the Corporation has reduced from ₹7.53 crore per annum to ₹3.84 crore, about ₹ 3.69 crore is saved by the Corporation every year.
