An injured peafowl was operated upon at the Coimbatore Corporation Zoo in VOC Park on Thursday.

The pea fowl that was flying out of the jail grounds dashed against the wind screen of a bus and suffered a fracture in its right wing. It was rescued and brought to the zoo.

Zoo Director and Veterinarian K. Ashokan operated upon the pea fowl and placed a stick for replacing the damaged bone. The pea fowl is under treatment and would be under observation for one week. If the surgical process fails and the peafowl does not regain the ability to fly, the right wings will have to be removed, Dr.Asokan said.

The Corporation Zoo has so far performed ten surgeries for such injured animals rescued from various places and also on ailing animals and reptiles at the zoo. Three surgeries were performed on eagles, two on snakes and one on a crocodile which had its jaws torn while fighting with other crocodiles for food.
