In an effort to inculcate reading habits among children, as many as 30 books each in a bundle were handed over to as many as 167 Corporation and Government schools here on Monday as part of the The Hindu Group’s “Read & Rise Initiative” in association with Vijayalakshmi Charitable Trust.
The total total value of the books donated to the students is ₹ 10.83 lakh.
At a function held at SRP Ammaniammal Girls Higher Secondary School, the books were handed over to the head masters of select Corporation and Government schools to set up a library.

P. Ayyannan, Chief Education Officer, O. Arumugasamy, Founder trustee of Vijayalakshmi Charitable Trust, Managing Trustee of Former Police Officers’ Charitable Trust R. Vellingiri, Corporation Education Officer R. Ravi and others took part.
The Hindu has been taking up the Read & Rise initiative in various forms to reach the younger generation of students to develop their sustained reading skills.
Mr. Arumugasamy has also expressed his interest to re-initiate scholarships to deserving students for higher education through the trust. Mr. Ayyannan underlined the various efforts initiated by education department on cultivating the habit of reading, beyond text books.
