Household survey by banks

September 30, 2014 11:26 am | Updated 11:26 am IST - COIMBATORE:

Bank branches are expected to complete a household survey of bank account holders in the district by the end of this month.

According to the District Lead Bank manager K. Krishnamoorthy, about 1.5 lakh accounts have been opened in the district under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana since August 16.

This includes those who already have a bank account.

Since the scheme targets complete financial inclusion and covering those who are not under the banking system, the household survey was taken up 10 days ago.

The district has 228 villages, town panchayats, three municipalities, and 100 wards in the city.

Each area will be covered by a bank branch for the survey.

Based on the results of the survey, households that do not have a single bank account will be targeted and efforts will be taken to cover all the households in the district under banking by the end of November, he said.

A mega camp was held at all the bank branches on Saturday.

S. Suresh Kumar, Deputy General Manager of Canara Bank, distributed savings bank passbooks and personalised RuPay cards to beneficiaries of the scheme.

He said that existing bank account holders need not open a fresh account to get a RuPay card.

However, for insurance coverage under the scheme, the account holder should be aged between 18 and 65 and the account must be operated at least once a month.

Even if a customer has multiple accounts, they are eligible for insurance cover only for one card.
