Heavy rain lashed Erode town and its suburbs on Tuesday, bringing the much needed relief to the people from the scorching heat.

Dark clouds gathered over the town in the evening and it started pouring at 4 p.m. The rain lasted for more than an hour, leaving several low lying areas in the town water logged.

Water got stagnated on the Brough road, Perundurai road, Mettur Road and Sathy main road, affecting the vehicular movement. Sewage mixed with rainwater overflowed on the roads.

“The drains on both sides of Perundurai road remain heavily silted as workers from Erode Corporation do not clean them on a regular basis.

Elected representatives in the council including Mayor and Deputy Mayor and Corporation officials travel on Perundurai road every day and they are well aware of the problem.

But no efforts had been taken up so far to solve it,” S. Senthilkumar, a shopkeeper in the area said.

Traffic on the Surampatty road and Market area was also disrupted for more than an hour due to heavy water logging.

Rainwater entered several houses at Indira Nagar and a few other residential areas in the town.

“The absence of proper drainage system was the reason for waterlogging. We have been asking the Corporation to construct more storm water drains in the area and clean the existing ones.

But our pleas fell on deaf ears. Whenever the town witnesses heavy rain, our colony will be flooded,” S. Shanthi, a resident in Indira Nagar complained.

Apart from Erode town, a few other parts in Erode district also witnessed moderate to heavy showers.
