Copious inflow into tanks and ponds; water level in reservoirs improves

Boys use a torn mosquito net to try their hand at fishing in a canal of Muthannankulam tank in the city on Thursday.

Heavy downpour that lashed the city and its suburbs in the evenings and at night during the last three days has resulted in copious inflow into tanks and ponds besides renewal of vegetation, bringing in the much required respite for people from the soaring mercury level.

On Wednesday alone, the 11 rain gauge stations in Coimbatore recorded a total rainfall of 399.70 mm and the average rainfall stood at 33.31 mm.

Various water bodies in and around the city have witnessed improvement in water level and the inflow continues to be steady.

With the rain forecast continuing for two days, many areas of the city witnessed sharp showers on Thursday as well.

Sharp showers were reported in the lower reaches of the Nilgiris and at Siruvani hills.

This has resulted in increased inflow into the reservoirs, bringing respite to the city’s water supply managers.
