The city has a reputation for catering to the latest fashion trends. Now, it sees one more trend slowly catching up here – coloured contact lenses. While it is more common among those in the entertainment industry, an increasing number of youngsters in Coimbatore are opting for these lenses.
Kalpana Narendran, Senior Consultant, Aravind Eye Care System, says, “Even today (Thursday), I attended to a youngster who did not have any power but still wanted contact lenses with the colour to match her dresses.” While they are safe, she urges people to consult an ophthalmologist or optometrist before wearing them. Such lenses should not be worn more than 10 to 12 hours a day and have to be handled carefully.
S.K. Sundaramoorthy, Chairman of the Lotus Eye Hospital and Institute here, says these lenses are made by multinational companies with stellar reputations. However, people must check for dry eyes or allergies before opting for them. The demand for such cosmetic lenses is more in metros such as Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai, he adds.

M. Hemanandhini, Head, Department of Ophthalmology, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) cautions parents to keep a close eye on their children if they opt for contact lenses.
Colour contact lenses are used for cosmetic purposes but they have to be kept in hygienic conditions and involved a lot of maintenance since they have to be worn every day. Only those children who understand the responsibility must be allowed to wear coloured contact lenses, she adds.
