A medical camp was conducted here on Thursday for the conservancy workers of the Coimbatore Corporation. Of the total of 3,000 conservancy workers working in five zones for the civic body, around 500 conservancy workers were covered in this camp. The rest would be covered in a phased manner.
According to an official release, 11 medical tests were being performed in these medical camps. For women workers, tests such as mammogram were also being performed. In a resolution passed on April 25, the Coimbatore Corporation had allotted a sum of Rs. 25 lakh for these medical camps. In a similar exercise, a yoga camp was also held recently for conservancy workers.
Mayor S.M. Velusamy inaugurated the camp in the presence of Corporation Commissioner G. Latha. The camp was held at the Ramakrishna Hospital. Mr. Velusamy said that the services of around 170 conservancy workers were regularised recently. Many of these workers tended to be alcoholic. The adverse effects of this habit would also be explained in these medical camps. Those found to have medical ailments during these camps would be provided treatment and the costs covered under the Chief Minister’s Health Insurance Scheme. Ms. Latha said that a team of ten women medical doctors has been constituted to oversee the medical camps. The results of these medical tests would be loaded into a database to ensure follow-up treatment for the conservancy workers.
