He is dead but his heart, liver, kidneys and eyes live on

The heart, liver, kidneys and eyes of a 25-year-old man, who was declared brain-dead after a road accident in the city on Monday, were donated on Tuesday.

M. Rajagopal suffered a severe head injury in the accident around 8 p.m. and was brought immediately to Sree Abirami Hospital at Sundarapuram.

Diagnosis revealed he had slipped into irreversible coma. He was declared brain-dead around 4.30 p.m., after the second of the two mandatory tests were conducted, to assess a victim’s condition before being declared brain-dead.

Soon after being sounded about the irreversible condition of the man after the first assessment, his father Maruthachalam, a construction worker, expressed his desire to donate his son’s organs.

Rajagopal had completed B.Sc. (Computer Science) and was working as a technician in a local company.

A team of ten doctors headed by P. Periyasamy, Managing Director of Sree Abirami Hospital, harvested the organs.

While a kidney was donated to a patient at Abirami Hospital, the other was sent to SPT Hospital near Cross Cut Road in Gandhipuram.

The eyes went to Aravind Eye Hospital in Coimbatore and the heart and liver to Global Hospital in Chennai.

Sree Abirami Hospital coordinated with the city police to ensure that there was quick transport of the donated organs by road to the two hospitals in Coimbatore and also to the the airport, from where the heart and liver were taken by a chartered flight to Chennai.
