Vitals organs were retrieved from a 75-year-old man who was declared brain dead here on Sunday.
The victim Masakkonar from Vellalore near here was injured in an accident on January 8. He was admitted to Sree Abirami Hospital. However, a scan revealed that his brain had suffered irreversible damage and had become dysfunctional after which he was declared 'brain dead' on Saturday by a team of doctors.
His family members were informed of his condition and counselled on organ donation. After getting their consent, a team of doctors retrieved two kidneys, liver and heart valves.

Cadaver Coordinator R. Senthilkumar, a consultant surgical gastroenterologist, headed the organ retrieval team. The transplantation was performed by a team of doctors headed by P. Periyaswamy, Managing Director and Senior Consultant Urologist, Sree Abirami Hospital, and comprising surgeons from various super speciality hospitals from Chennai. They performed the kidney transplantation to both recipients at Sree Abirami Hospital.
The liver and heart valves were donated to patients at Apollo Hospital and Madras Medical Mission, Chennai, respectively. The organs were transported by road in a six-hour journey in a special vehicle during the early hours of Sunday.
