The Association of University Teachers (AUT) has urged the State Government to declare the Chikkaiah Naicker College at Veerappanchatiram here as a government college.
A press release from its vice president N. Pasupathy said that the aided college was founded in 1954 and has been serving the needs of higher education in the district. However, due to mismanagement and financial irregularities, the college was administered by a special officer.
The release said that after several legal battles the Apex Court had ruled that the college is a government institution. However, despite many representations from the public and other organisations, the Government is yet to declare it as government college. The release said that an ordinance by the government declaring it as a government college will be a fitting tribute to Dr. MGR during his centenary birth celebrations here on September 6.

The release said that the declaration does not involve any additional financial commitment and there are no legal issues too. Hence, AUT urge the Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to declare it as government college during the celebrations.
