Government schools in the district are flying high. For, close on the heels of producing toppers in Class X public examinations, its students have proved they could also excel at the international level in sports, on par with private school students.

Four girls of the Government Higher Secondary School at Karamadai here were among the five from Tamil Nadu who were in the national team that emerged victorious in under-19 category in the Indo-Nepal international dodgeball tournament in Kathmandu recently.

The school also had a representation in the boys’ section with D. Ajith Kumar making it to the national team.

More than years of practice, hard work and sweat, the students credit their achievement to their teachers and headmasters of various Government schools, who raised the funds for their trip.

The four students who made the school proud are S. Nalina Priya, P. Nandhi, K. Agalya and A. Anthony Jenisa, all class XI students. R. Sowfarnica, a first year student of Sri Guru Institute of Technology here, was the other girl from Tamil Nadu to find a place in the team.

These students, who excelled in State and national events last year, were among the few in the national team to come from a Government school, said J.A. Thiruselvi, the physical director of the school, who was also the team manager.
