Gold appraiser, friend held for cheating bank

A gold appraiser and his friend were arrested on charges of cheating a bank of ₹ 5.85 lakh between February 2018 and June 2019.

Ramanathapuram police said that Venkatesh, who worked as a gold appraiser at Bank of India, helped his friend Sebastian to pledge imitation jewellery and obtain a gold loan of ₹ 5,85,000.

The accused were booked for criminal conspiracy, forgery, and cheating based on a complaint lodged by the chief manager of the Bank.

Accident victim dies

A 27-year-old woman from Avinashi, who was hit by a speeding car on Sunday, died without responding to treatment at a private hospital in Coimbatore on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as M. Nandini, a native of Avinashi. A person close to the family of the deceased said that they had given consent to harvest her organs after she was declared dead .

One held, country-made guns seized

Following the arrest of six men in October for robbing people at gunpoint in Avinashi and Perumanallur, police arrested one more person for supplying guns. Two country-made guns were seized from Ashiq (30), a native of Bihar.

Murder victim’s identity ascertained

A day after the body of a woman was found in Perumal Gounden Valasu, Mulanur, police said that the deceased was from Namakkal. The woman’s husband was questioned by police on Tuesday.

57 arrested in 54 cases

A special team of Tiruppur city police have arrested 57 persons in connection with 54 cases involving illegal sales of ganja, lottery, tobacco products and liquor on November 18 and 19. A press release from the city police said that six persons were arrested for illegal sales of ganja, four for illegal lottery sales, 38 for selling tobacco products and nine for unauthorised sale of liquor.
