Distribution of welfare assistance, ceremonial parade and cultural programmes marked the Independence Day celebrations organised by the district administration on the Chikkanna Government Arts College grounds here on Monday.
Guard of honour
District Collector M. Mathivanan unfurled the national flag at 9.30 a.m. and inspected the guard of honour given by police.

He was accompanied by Superintendent of Police V. Balakrishnan.
Mr. Mathivanan honoured a total of 39 freedom fighters and their kin during the occasion before distributing the welfare assistance worth Rs. 10.81 lakh to 81 beneficiaries.

From the relief extended, 11 farmers together got Rs. 2.4 lakh as compensation for the damage caused to their crops by the dyeing units through indiscriminate discharge of effluents into River Noyyal for almost two decades.
The day's celebrations ended with cultural programmes by students of various colleges and schools.
District Revenue Officer R. Gajalakshmi, Project Officer of District Rural Development Agency Renuka Devi, Chief Educational Officer T. Rajendiran and officials from various departments were present. Mayor K. Selvaraj hoisted the national flag and took salute in the Independence Day celebrations observed by Tirupur Corporation administration.
