The Coimbatore District Road Safety and Traffic Advisory Committee recently gave its approval to the reports by consultants for the Gandhipuram and Ukkadam flyover projects, proposed by the State Highways Department.
An official of the department told The Hindu on Tuesday that the reports were also approved by the alignment committee of the department. The proposal was now with the design wing and after finalising the design, the estimates would be prepared for the project.
While the Gandhipuram project had the administrative sanction, the department would now apply to the State Government for administrative approval for the Ukkadam project. The Government had sanctioned about Rs. 60 lakh for detailed project report for the Ukkadam flyover.

The Gandhipuram flyover was announced as a Rs. 100 crore project in 2010 and the Ukkadam flyover project was announced in 2011. The projects are expected to ease the traffic congestion in Gandhipuram and Ukkadam areas. The official said works were progressing and the projects were expected to be in the implementation stage soon.
It would be three tier-flyovers at Gandhipuram and Ukkadam. While the Gandhipuram one would be for 1.2 km, the Ukkadam flyover would be for 1.5 km. Both the projects would involve land acquisition and the acquisition would be minimum for the Gandhipuram project.
K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, said the Gandhipuram project should have been in completion stage now and the Ukkadam project was also announced nearly two years ago. However, both the proposals were still in the preliminary stage. It would take months to get the final approval and both the projects involved land acquisition too. Hence, the focus should be on completing the projects without further delay so that the benefits reached the public.
