Walks, expos, screening camps and other forms of sensitisation marked the World Diabetes Day observance in the city on Thursday.
Aravind Eye Hospital has begun preparations for a massive screening camp by the end of this week, while Sankara Eye Hospital had an illuminated blue ring – the symbol of diabetes – put up outside its building on Brooke Bond Road and said it wanted to draw the attention of the public to the risk of diabetic retinopathy.
Hospitals across the city got up one event or the other to warn people of the risk factors – genetic and life-style. Dr. Rajendran’s Diabetes Centre organised a walk around Race Course Road to stress the importance of exercise as a means to keep blood sugar level under control. Diabetologist V. Rajendran said walking and other forms of exercise could even serve as a preventive measure for persons in whose families the genetic factor was strong enough to pose the risk of diabetes.Kovai Medical Center and Hospital organised an expo at which people were explained how diabetes occurred and how it could be prevented.
