The police on Thursday removed activists of the Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK) when they attempted to stage a demonstration at four places in the district accusing the government of foisting false cases on their leader Vijayakant. In Coimbatore, 354 DMDK activists, including 30 women, assembled at Pappa Naickenpalayam; and 145, including five women, at Periayanaickenpalayam. In Pollachi, the police removed around 250, including 20 women. In Tirupur, members of DMDK were arrested on Thursday for staging demonstrations in Tirupur city and Udumalpet town without obtaining the requisite permission from the police.
“Nowhere in the country, except in Tamil Nadu, cases are registered against a Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly for airing opinions in public forums,” they said.

Sixty-two conservancy workers, including 47 women, were removed by the police, when they attempted to picket the South Zone office of the Coimbatore Corporation demanding that their service be regularised. They said that even those who had put in more than ten years of service were working as daily wage earners. They resorted to picketing when the police denied them permission to stage a demonstration at Ukkadam Aatuppalam. Corporation officials said regularisation of service could be taken up once a case pending before a case was disposed.

The All Women Police Station here has registered a case against Raja alias Ramesh (23) of Sullivan Street on charges of refusing to live with his wife Preethi Priya (23).

The petitioner said that a dowry of 13 sovereigns was given as against the agreed 20 sovereigns. The girl’s parents had promised to give the remaining in due course. From day one, Ramesh refused to live with her stating that she should get the remaining jewellery, and Rs. 5 lakh for starting his own gold smithy.
Women found hanging
In two separate incidents, two women were found hanging at their houses on Thursday.The police said that Manojkumar (23) found his wife Kanchan (22) hanging when he returned home after winding up his shop. In the other incident, Mahalakshmi (25), wife of Sasikumar (27), was found hanging at her residence in Saravanampatti.
