Diphtheria, tetanus vaccinationdrive nearing completion

The Health Department has intensified the yearly vaccination drive for diphtheria and tetanus in Coimbatore district, in the wake of a diphtheria outbreak in Kadambur Hills in Erode and subsequent admission of patients to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Sources with the Health Department said that the ongoing vaccination drive was conducted under the Universal Immunisation Programme, and was nearing completion.

The drive has been covering persosn aged between two and 17 who have not been vaccinated in all 12 blocks of Coimbatore.

Students who have already been vaccinated at private and Government hospitals were exempted from the drive.

On Wednesday, CMCH had 11 cases of diphtheria.
