Minister for Higher Education P. Palaniappan and Minister for Highways and Minor Ports Edappadi K. Palaniswami reviewed various development works carried out at Periyar University in Salem on Thursday.
The Ministers laid the foundation stone for the construction of the third floor of the science block that was executed at a cost of Rs. 1 crore.

They also inaugurated various other works that had been carried out at a cost of Rs. 2.5 crore, including new computer block and dining hall for non-teaching staff members.
Besides this, they inspected the construction work that is going on at men’s and women’s hostel.
They also flagged off the first university bus that would transport students and faculty between the university and the Old Bus Stand.

Currently the university has no bus service for the students and faculty, and they have to depend on other means of transportation to reach the university.
Mr. Palaniappan said that various schemes were announced by the Chief Minister for the welfare of the students’ community including free laptop scheme.
He urged the students to have positive outlook and utilize the schemes.
K. Muthuchelian, Vice-Chancellor of the university listed various activities that are currently being carried out for the benefit of the students and presented a report on the achievements of the university, both in academic and non-academic areas.
Earlier, K. Angamuthu, Registrar-in-charge of the university welcomed the gathering, and Prof. S. Rajendran proposed a vote of thanks.
