The Mettupalayam police, on Wednesday, arrested T. Muthuraj (43) of Dindigul for killing a man sleeping at the Mettupalayam Bus Stand. After the murder, he surrendered before the Village Administrative Officer and had claimed that he committed the murder because he wanted to go to jail.

The victim, R. Shanmugam (57), a cook of Rasipalayam near Sulur, was sleeping at the bus stand in the early hours of Wednesday, when Muthuraj smashed his head with a stone. In his confession to VAO Malarmani, the accused Muthuraj identified himself as a resident of Vilampatti village near Nilakottai, in Dindigul district. The man stated that he was married in 2002 but was separated from his wife. He worked as an electrician and moved from place to place. It is learnt that he was depressed as he could not see his wife and son for many years. He came to Mettupalayam four days ago and was determined to go to jail after killing someone. Muthuraj was produced in the Mettupalayam Court and lodged in jail under judicial custody for 15 days. The police said that he could soon be subjected to medical examination, before initiating further course of action.

Shanmugam’s body has been taken to Mettupalayam Government Hospital, for post-mortem examination.
