The Coimbatore Corporation on Tuesday removed nearly 150 tonnes of debris dumped for a kilometre-and-a-half along the southern bund of Muthannankulam as part of the efforts to regulate dumping of debris.
Commissioner G. Latha, who ordered the cleaning operation around noon after a spot inspection, said that the Corporation wanted to clean the tanks of debris and this was the first operation.
Following her instructions, the civic body pressed into service five earthmovers and lorries, which made 47 trips to take the debris to the dump yard in Vellalore. The cleaning operation would continue on Wednesday as well.

Sources said that the Commissioner had formed a team of officials involving Assistant Town Planning Officers, Zonal Sanitary Officers, Assistant Engineers of Junior Engineers of the ward concerned to monitor dumping of debris.
The team would not only check and arrest the dumping of debris and seize the lorries, but also penalise the offender.
Ms. Latha said that the objective of the Corporation’s action would be to tackle the problem at the place of origin.

Recalling her meeting with the builders, she said that she had addressed the builders’ problems in disposing of debris by allocating places across the city. The Corporation had also issued a press release in this regard.
Almost every ward had a place where the builders could dump the debris. If the quantity was huge, they could take the debris to the zonal dump yard.
This way, the Corporation wanted to prevent dumping of debris in water bodies, drains and alongside roads. But, unfortunately, a few people were bent on not following the instructions. The civic body would ensure that such people fell in line and dumped debris at the designated places.
