Children in the city and its periphery have a reason to cheer about as the Coimbatore Corporation has planned a play area.
In the Corporation Budget for 2013-14, Finance and Taxation Committee chairman R. Prabhakaran has said: “A modern and well-equipped model children complex will be constructed in a part of the children play area on the VOC Park campus. For this purpose, a sum of Rs. 25 lakh has been allotted during this financial year.”
Sources in the civic body say that the play area will come up in a corner of the VOC Park, likely on a 5,000 sq.ft. area.

The Corporation is yet to identify the exact location, though. At the play area, the Corporation will provide all sorts of children-friendly play equipment that will match the best in any children’s play area.
The Corporation is in talks with a few private players to set up the equipment.
The park will be filled with sand to make it safe for the young ones and also have a children’s toilet.

He says that the Corporation is also in the process of setting up play area in all its primary schools.
This is also part of the Budget proposal, wherein the civic body has said that to promote sporting culture in schools it has decided to invest Rs. 60 lakh.
The sources say that in each of the 20 primary schools the Corporation will spend Rs. 3 crore to install equipment that will help developing the culture.
Since the civic body has already made arrangements for the implementation of the Budget proposals, there will not be any time lag in implementing the two announcements, the sources add.
Parks for women
Aside from this the Corporation has planned two parks exclusively for women and children.
