Thanks to the recent rain in Siruvani catchment, the Coimbatore Corporation is contemplating supplying Siruvani water on alternate days.

According to sources, the civic body was waiting for the water level to improve further in the Siruvani Reservoir, where the water level at present was 37.40 feet.

The full reservoir level is 49.50 feet.

The Corporation’s move came close on the heels of the decision to restart issue of water supply connections, which the civic body had stopped around six months ago following fall in water level in the reservoir.

The sources said that with the increase in water level, the Corporation had steadily increased the water supply to the city – from 67 million litres a day on July 20, it had touched 74 million litres a day on July 23.

The Corporation supplied Siruvani water to 26 wards in full and a few in part. And, it supplied the water once in four days.

If the Corporation were to supply water on alternate days, it would also ease the pressure on Pilloor water supply as the civic body diverted a portion of the Pilloor water to Siruvani-fed areas – those in Kurichi and Kuniamuthur in the South Zone.

The sources said that the Corporation also drew a good quantity of water from the Pilloor Reservoir – 97 million litres a day.

Shutters closed

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) that managed the Pilloor Reservoir had on Wednesday 3 a.m. closed the four shutters it had opened on Tuesday afternoon at 3.15 to discharge water into River Bhavani to maintain the water level.

Sources in the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board said that the water level in the dam stood at around 95 feet as against the full reservoir level of 100.

Meanwhile, the weather prediction from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University was that the city would continue to experience intermittent showers, as it did on Wednesday.

In the 24 hours ending Wednesday morning, Chinnakalar had received the maximum rainfall at 186 mm, followed by Cincona at 117 and Valparai Taluk Office at 80 mm. Pollachi recorded 30 mm rain.
