Coimbatore gears up to improve pass percentage in public exams

Multiple revision exams planned to identify weak performers

School Education Department officials in the city are gearing up to better last year’s performance of students in the Plus Two and Class X public examinations. Several revision tests have been planned for both these classes in the coming days to ensure the pass percentage exceeded that of last year’s.

In Plus Two public examinations, Coimbatore stood seventh in the State ranking in 2014, up from tenth position in the preceding year.

Unsatisfactory performances

Chief Educational Officer A. Gnanagowri told The Hindu here on Wednesday that Government schools with unsatisfactory performances in the last public examinations were identified and given special attention this year.

The performances of such schools were reviewed on a weekly basis. All the vacancies in such schools were filled up and inputs were obtained from the teachers to improve the performances.

Revision tests

Two sets of revision tests have been scheduled for Plus Two and three sets for Class X in Government schools of the district.

The written tests of the public examinations begin on March 19 for Class X and March 5 for Plus Two.

The tests would commence on January 6 and would go on till the practical tests of the public examination begin in February. There will be a one-week interval between the tests, which will give teachers to identify weaknesses in the performances and take remedial measures, she said.

Special classes would also be held during this period. While it would focus on ensuring that academically weak-students study were able to clear the examinations, students with potential to get State ranks would also be identified and trained accordingly, the Chief Educational Officer said.

Of the total 43,049 students who appeared in the SSLC examinations of 2014, as many as 41,154 cleared it, a pass percentage of 95.60, an improvement of 1.48 over the previous year’s performance. The district went up in the State ranking to the fifth position, up from last year’s eighth position.

Private schools

Private schools have also been told to focus on improving their performances as their contribution was also vital to improve the district’s performance.
