Passengers urged to keep coaches and platforms clean

Southern Railway – Salem Division on Friday launched a cleanliness awareness campaign at the Coimbatore Railway Junction. It was flagged off by Chairman of GEM Hospitals Dr. C. Palanivelu and Senior Divisional Medical Officer Subhidha Manicksam.

Nursing students of GEM Institute along with staff of the railways took out a rally on the platforms, sensitising the passengers on their role in keeping the station clean.

They boarded trains and distributed pamphlets to the passengers asking them not to litter the coaches and railway stations and to extend their support in keeping the stations clean.

Officials said that a host of conservancy staff have been brought in on outsourcing basis to keep the Coimbatore Junction clean and tidy.

It has been proposed to carry out similar drives in Podanur, Coimbatore North, Tirupur, Erode and Salem as well. A wheel chair for the benefit of aged and ailing passengers has been made available at the junction.

A cellular phone number will be announced shortly and passengers in need of the facility could call 30 minutes before the departure or arrival time for making use of the facility.

The wheel chair would be handled by the head load workers at the junction and GEM Hospital would pay the service charge to the porters on behalf of the passengers using the facility. An announcement on the guidelines for using this service would be announced shortly, according to sources here.
