Coimbatore police are preparing a database of Gurkhas working as security personnel in the city.
City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan told The Hindu that the burglary at a fruits shop on DB Road in R.S. Puram recently was of concern, because those involved were security personnel from the Gurkha community, from Nagendra district of Nepal.
Mr.Viswanathan said that all inspectors have been asked to prepare a list of Gurkhas who work as night patrol security personnel in colonies. This is to be done with the help of residential welfare associations, who should help identify the security personnel, so that antecedents could be verified.

Before hiring someone as a watchman, or for any other position, residential colonies could collect details of those being considered, so that police could carry out verification checks. For security personnel, it was better to have photographic and biometric details, with place of origin and antecedents documented. This would act as a deterrent against crimes. Collection of data would be monitored by Assistant Commissioners of Police, and this work would be periodically reviewed.
Police officials pointed out that Gurkhas move around at odd hours and police perceive this to be part of the job. In the absence of a database, crimes by such security personnel would be easy to commit and hard to detect.
