As part of the ongoing endeavour to open more channels of communication with members of the public, the City Police are mulling a proposal to have instances of crime and road rule violations reported to them on a real-time basis. These could be done by sending text messages from the spot using mobile phones running Android.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Pravesh Kumar told The Hindu that under instructions from Commissioner of Police A.K. Viswanathan, police are looking to bring in a lot of tech-savvy initiatives like the SMS facility.
Mr. Pravesh Kumar said all such facilities are being explored to identify the right one that would help the police in opening up another channel of communication with the public for getting information on a real-time basis.

One of the options being looked into by the police is the Android Mobile Application developed by R. Yuvarani Karthikeyan and B. Karthikeyan of Coimbatore based Droidhash Technologies.
The software will sync with the website of the Coimbatore City Police and go a long way in ensuring public safety, instant police help and in reducing crime rate.
The application will enable all Android mobile phone users in Coimbatore to become friends of the police by reporting crime incidents, traffic rule violations and offences with the proof (photograph) and location or scene (Google maps) without disclosing their identity.

Mobile phone users with Android application but without internet connectivity could send the information in a text format as SMS.
