Chit fund raiser ends life

P. Muniswara Moorthy (31) of Pannimadai, near Thudiyalur, who consumed poison died at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Thursday. He took to the extreme step as he was unable to keep up the promise that he made to certain persons who invested in a chit fund he raised.

He had promised them sweets for the Deepavali season. The police said that he had spent the money and could not buy sweets for the depositors.Attempt to murder

The police on Thursday arrested C. Raja alias Kozhi Raja (37) of Lighthouse Road, and S. Mahendran (28), of Gandhi Maanagar, for allegedly trying to murder an accomplice in a case against them. The police said that R. Gowtham (26) of K.K. Pudur had come forward to admit his role in an assault case, and complete the legal formalities. This enraged Raja and Mahendran.

They attacked him using a knife at Flower Market early on Thursday. The police have registered cased against them under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 506(i) (threat to life) of the Indian Penal Code.

Student dies of burns

V. Vijayalakshmi (15) of Chettipalayam, a Standard IX student of government school at Chettipalayam died at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital of burns.

The police said that on Wednesday she poured kerosene on some pieces of wood for heating water, but the flame accidentally spread on her.
