A group citizens has commenced a social media campaign to educate people against bursting crackers during the coming festival season in a way harmful to animals and birds.

This time, we have decided to take up the campaign many days ahead of the Deepavali through twitter, facebook, and whatsapp. Last time, the campaign was on a smaller scale, said K. Ravindran, president of Nature Society of Tirupur.

The activists have designed catchy messages including pictures, cartoons and punch lines.

We want children too to see the messages as they compel parents to buy crackers, they said.

The messages tell citizens high decibel sounds scare pet dogs, and cats too.

This is the time when migratory birds visit ponds. Bursting of crackers could scare them away, said Mr. Ravindran.
