‘Call us if you spot a sparrow'

April 17, 2012 12:10 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 11:25 pm IST - COIMBATORE:

Next time when you spot a sparrow, just call 0422-4372457, 97874-10710/95004-58208 to help Citizen Sparrow, a nation-wide initiative, record the information to study the sparrow population.

Reports on dwindling population of sparrows owing to urbanisation, absence of feed and nesting and roosting places indicated an alarming trend of the bird reaching the stage of extinction.

Hence, nearly 22 organisations across the country joined hands to form Citizen Sparrow, to compensate for the absence of a research group to study the sparrow population.

The Citizen Sparrow has hosted a website wherein people could register online their information on sighting of sparrows by accessing www.citizensparrow.in. However, considering the rural and semi-rural population not having required access to internet, it has come out with the new initiative wherein volunteers of Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF) and OSAI in Coimbatore will take the details from the callers and record them in the website.

Questionnaire

The person taking the call will ask the caller five questions. The questionnaire will be basically to elicit very crucial information such as area/location of sighting and mark the same using the google map, date of sighting, period of sighting if the caller had seen it before, distance of sighting and nature of area.

These information will be instantly updated on the website.
