‘BJP does not need Governor to rule Tamil Nadu’

November 18, 2017 08:35 am | Updated 08:35 am IST - Coimbatore

The Bharatiya Janata Party did not require the Tamil Nadu Governor’s help to rule the State. The party would win elections to the rule the State, the party’s State president Tamilisai Soundararajan said here on Friday.

Addressing reporters at the Coimbatore airport she wondered why the opposition parties should have reservations about the Governor Banwarilal Purohit’s interaction with the officials, when the State Ministers themselves had welcomed the move.

The opposition parties talked as though the Governor was administering the State by convening the Assembly. The Governor’s interaction with officials in Coimbatore would only strengthen the administration and he was well within his constitutional rights to do so. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam working president M.K. Stalin had said that the Governor should stop his interactions. This only reflected his lack of concern for the people. Earlier Mr. Stalin wanted the Central Government to appoint a full-time Governor for the State and when the Government did so, he was criticising the Governor’s action, she said.

In response to a question whether the Central Government would welcome such a move if the President were to do so, Ms. Soundararajan said if it was in people’s interest, it would be welcomed.

Commenting on the recent IT raids in houses and establishments belonging to members of the Sasikala family, the BJP State president said if former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa were to be alive, she would be shocked at the amount of wealth they had accumulated.
