The Rs. 4.95-crore road the Coimbatore Corporation had laid on the Big Tank bund has been thrown open for traffic on Monday, after Chief Minister Jayalalithaa inaugurated the facility through video conferencing from Chennai.

She inaugurated the street lights installed on the Palakkad Road.

According to the corporation, the civic body had proposed the 1.20-km road sometime late last year and started the work in January. The objective was to decongest the stretch between Aathupalam and the Ukkadam Junction.

A corporation engineer said that prior to taking up the work, the corporation had sought expert opinion from the Government College of Technology on the bund’s strength to hold the traffic. Based on the opinion, the bund was widened and compacting work was done.

Fences were erected on both sides of the bund, paver blocks were placed, and 68 solar-powered street lights were installed. Grass was planted along the bund.

Sadiq Ali, Councillor, said that only two-wheeler riders proceeding from Aathhupalam to Ukkadam could use the road.

And hence, it may not ease traffic congestion in the area, he added.

The Chief Minister inaugurated the street lights erected by the corporation at a cost of Rs. 2.99 crore along the median on the Palakkad Road. A corporation release here has said that the objective of installing street lights was to prevent accidents on the busy stretch.
