Banned plastic items seized, Corpn. to use them to lay roads

Officials from the Salem Corporation seized about 3 tonnes of banned plastic items from the godown of a private sweet makers here.

Based on a tip off, Corporation Commissioner R.Sadheesh and other senior officials raided the godown near Rajaganapathi temple here and seized about three tonnes of banned plastic carry bags. City Health Officer K.Parthibhan, and Ammapet Zone Assistant Commissioner R.Kavitha were present during the raid.

Mr. Sadheesh said, “the value of seized goods will be around ₹ 4 to 5 lakh. A fine of ₹2.5 lakh has been imposed on them for using plastics banned by the State government.” Mr. Sadheesh said that investigation was being conducted regarding the point of manufacture and action would be taken against them. He added that the plastics seized by the Corporation would be used in its various road projects.

Mr. Sadheesh also said that being Deepavali season, businesses had been advised to not to use banned plastics bags for packaging.

“Five teams, four under the Assistant Commissioners and a team under City Health Officer have been formed to monitor use of banned plastics and action will be taken against violators,” he added.

According to the Corporation officials, since the ban, 51,000 kg of banned plastics have been seized in the Corporation limits and ₹33,19,170 has been collected as fine from violators.

Bakery sealed in Erode

A bakery at Kadayampatti in Bhavani block was sealed after Collector C. Kathiravan found banned plastic items in the shop on Saturday. During an inspection, Mr. Kathiravan found the items and told officials to seize them. He asked the officials to seal the shop.
