Attack on journalists condemned

Members of various journalist organisations staged a demonstration in the city on Wednesday to condemn the attack on journalists by the Andhra Police at Tirupati on Tuesday night. Calling it an inhuman act, senior journalists, who spoke at the protest, sought action against the police who attacked the journalists.

They criticised the Andhra and the Union Governments for providing high security and a red carpet welcome to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksha and for beating journalists and lensmen from Tamil Nadu who had gone to cover the event.

The demonstrators also demanded action against the policemen, who attacked journalists and the persons behind the incident. Members of Kovai Pathrikayalargal Sangam, Ulaikum Pathrikayalargal Sangam, Kovai Media Welfare Association and the Tamil Nadu Union of Journalists took part in the protest.

About 50 persons attached to the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi were removed by the City Police on Wednesday evening when they gheraoed the Collectorate to condemn the attacks.

Tirupur: Reporters and photojournalists staged a demonstration here on Wednesday in protest against the alleged roughing up of journalists from Tamil Nadu, who went for coverage of Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa’s visit at Tirupati by Andhra police.

V. Thuyavan, secretary of Tirupur Journalists Welfare Association, called upon the Andhra government to take action against the police officials, who misbehaved with the journalists while they attempted to cover the visit as well as the protests staged by the MDMK men.

Udhagamandalam: Print, video and photo journalists staged a demonstration near the Collectorate here on Wednesday to condemn the attack on reporters from Tamil Nadu by the Andhra Pradesh police at Tirupati.

Pointing out that the mediapersons were only doing their duty, they urged the Andhra government to take severe action against the police officials who had attacked them.
